Waffen SS

Germany's armed forces in World War II were arguably the best-trained, equipped and motivated of all the major powers – understandably so in a nation geared to re-armament and aggression to its neighbours. Within these powerful forces emerged another force, the Waffen-SS, who were formed initially as armed bodyguards to Adolf Hitler himself, but later became a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

Tough, often lavishly equipped and politically indoctrinated, SS troops formed over 38 divisions and numerous other regimental and battalion-sized units, totaling nearly a million men under arms. Their armoured units won many plaudits for their actions, and although relationships between regular army units and the Waffen-SS were sometimes strained, most SS units fought courageously, sometimes ferociously, against great odds until the wars end in Berlin, 1945.

There are many examples of SS troops fighting well and within the bounds of what we can call 'civilised war', but too many incidents of brutality occured for most people's tastes.

Warlord Games presents some of Germany's toughest troops, eager to close with their enemies and put their training and equipment to the test...

Uncompromising and well-equipped, the soldiers of the Waffen-SS struck fear into the heart of many of their Allied opponents. Clad in their trademark camouflaged uniforms and displaying a tenacity and zeal bordering on the fanatical the Waffen-SS were a dangerous opponent in both attack and defence.

Waffen-SS contains:

  • 6-man Command Squad: Officer,NCO with MP40 SMG, 2-man radio team with rifles, Medic and a rifleman

Waffen SS Specialists

Flammenwerfer! Infantry close range combat was always terrifying and deadly; it was deadlier still when flamethrowers were brought into play...Teams were carefully trained in their use. Most commonly formed from Engineer and Pioneer companies. They were brave men indeed as they had to close the range to perhaps 30 yards or less for their frightful weapons to take effect.

Mercifully, more often than not, the threat of the searing flame would bring about a surrender or flight from the enemy, but for those unwilling or unable to take flight, death would come hard.

Flamethrower teams therefore were priority targets for snipers, and certainly on the Russian front, the life of a captured flamethrower crew was measured in minutes, such was the horror they inflicted on their foe.

This set features the Warlord Games Figure Head System. This allows you to choose which heads to attach to your models allowing amazing variety and poseability.

This set contains a two man flame thrower team, a sniper and a spotter.

Waffen SS Combat Engineers and Goliath

The Goliath was  used by the German engineer units in a variety of roles.  It was essentially a radio contolled tracked bomb, carrying a big charge of high explosives direct to where it was needed, commonly a pillbox, minefield or disabled enemy tank.  The controller steered the robot tank by using a wire connected to a simple contol box.

The Goliath was fairly successful and used on many fronts, and though slow and vulnerable to small arms fire would be a frightening sight as it waddled towards you with its deadly payload!

This set contains a 3 metal Combat Engineers and a Goliath Demolition Vehicle.

Item code: WGB-SS-29 RRP £10.00, Our Price £9.00
Fallschirmjager

The world's first paratroopers to be used in large numbers, the German Fallshirmjager were at the tip of the spear when war broke out in 1939. They led daring assaults on strategic targets, such as the fortress at Eben Emael, enabling the following panzers to overrun Europe.

As a paratrooper force the Fallschirmjager's greatest achievement would be the intense fighting they performed as they seized Crete in the face of more numerous British and Commonwealth forces during 1941. This pyrrhic victory meant that they were never again used en masse.

Small units still operated by glider and parachute, famously rescuing Italian leader Mussolini, and raiding behind American lines in the Ardennes. Their finest hour would undoubtly be the bitter fighting as they occupied the monastery at Monte Cassino for months in the face of overwhelming odds, earning themselves the nickname 'Green Devils'. The German Paratroopers were arguably the toughest in a tough army.

Late War German Army Leig 18 Infantry Gun

The German Light infantry support gun mark 18 was a short-barrelled 75mm howitzer . It was used throughout the war in most theatres and gave good quality, much needed support to the hard-pressed infantry.

It could be towed by light tractor, or even pulled by hand into position where it's low profile, small size and rapid fire made it a useful addition to the frontline strength.

Warlord's model captures it's stubby outline nicely and with it's action packed 3 man crew is a no brainer to add to any force.

German Army 3.7 Flak 43

The German flak 43 was a ubiquitous automatic anti-aircraft gun that served in most theatres of WW2 with the Army Navy and Luftwaffe. It would be found on patrol craft with the Navy and was also employed in a ground role, in an anti-tank and anti-personel role.

Waffen SS Nebelwerfer

German scientists had been working on rocketry for all manner of purposes in the years leading up to the war. When the Germans crashed over the border into Russia in 1942 they had a secret weapon, with the covername of Nebelwerfer or "Fog thrower". This was a multi-barreled, electrically-fired rocket launcher that sent it's payload of heavy rockets thousands of yards out to engulf enemy positions...

With a fearsome flash of flame and the howling of a banshee wail they caused terror when used in large numbers; bringing down a barrage on an area less accurately than artillery but with awesome psychological effect that could sap the will of a defender.

This SS Nebelwerfer team are shown readying their weapon; one paying out more cable, one fetching up new rockets and the third eager to press the fire trigger, fire each barrel and then move out to a new fire position before the fiery trails betray their position.

They fought on all fronts - from the invasion of France, across North Africa, from the Russian front to the climactic battles across Europe and the fall of the Third Reich.

Popular with their crews, they g
ave speed and protection from small arms fire and shell splinters in the final approach to combat, enabling the squad to disembark close to the target whilst the Hanomag’s machine gunner gave suppressing fire.

 Wittman's Tiger

Few names conjure up such images as that of the Tiger 1, Germany's first truly heavy tank.  This monstrous 52 ton machine carved out a reputation that even now is still remembered. It featured hugely thick armour  and a devastating 88mm gun that could pick off all allied tanks at huge ranges with great accuracy.

The Tiger inspired such dread in allied troops that any German Panzer could be misidentified as a Tiger, leading to a real phobia that was understandable.

Early Tiger battalions  were very well trained and had complete faith in its abilities, sometimes beyond its true capabilities. Perhaps its greatest proponent was Michael Wittman, who emerged as one of the greatest tank commanders of the war.  He built up an impressive numbers of kills of enemy tanks and anti tank guns, which he always  maintained were a more difficult foe.

Warlord Games have modelled Wittman in his U boat leather jacket that was his trade mark in Normandy. This then is Michael Wittman and his Tiger  before they set off to blunt the British 8th army's advance at Villers Bocage in  summer 1944
